Brief history of the establishment of A.F laboratories for medical research and blood bank and the development stages
Before 1953, the central laboratories were a section of the General Military Hospital in the Kobri Dome.
1953 -1956
Major General Dr. Yousef Bahgat Abdush, who is credited with the discovery of cholera-causing bacteria known as El Tor, established the main building of the laboratories, which was officially opened on October 20, 1956 under the name of the main laboratories for medical services, and divided into five sections:-
Section of Blood Chemistry Analysis, Section of Blood Research, Section of Bacteria , Section of Parasites ,and Section of Pathology.
In 1972
The back building was constructed to include the new sections that were added to the laboratories, which are: -
Clinical Virology Section, Food Analysis Section, Water Analysis Section, Drug Control Section and Toxicology Analysis Section.
The name of the laboratories has been changed to be the main medical research laboratories of the Armed Forces.
In 1985
To keep pace with the development in the medical field, the Immunology and Allergy Research Unit was established in a new independent building.
In 1992
The laboratories witnessed a new stage of comprehensive development, during which the infrastructure of the factories was renovated from electricity and sanitation, a new network was established with a complete change in furniture , in addition to the purchase of a large number of advanced devices in line with the latest international developments in the field of medical tests. This was done in three stages until 1996 , with the development of new departments that became necessary in the structure of the laboratories and their new tasks, namely:-
Radioisotope diagnostic unit, doping detection unit, electron microscope unit and biotechnology unit.
March 1997
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Minister of Defense and Military Production, has issued orders to include the Central Blood Bank to the laboratories under a new name, the Armed Forces Laboratories for Medical Research and the Blood Bank, with the start of the establishment of a new advanced building for the Central Blood Bank to be an addition to this large medical edifice. The construction of the new building, which is one of the latest blood banks in the Middle East, has begun to develop, as it contains sections on blood tabulation, blood control and separation of all blood components, as well as a special laboratory to conduct the necessary immunological research for marrow transplants in leukemia patients, which are increasingly needed day by day.
Year 2008
The establishment of the advanced research laboratory and the development of internal departments have been completed as follows: -
- Central Laboratory Section.
- Food Section.
- Toxicology Section.
- Nat section.
- Immunology Section.
- DNA Section.
Year 2016
Keeping pace with the development in the medical field and easing the burdens on civil society, the building of the Civilian Laboratory was established to work on withdrawing samples and analyzing them from civilians for a symbolic fee.
In order to maintain physical fitness and raise morale, a soccer stadium with legal specifications suitable for members of the armed forces has been established.
In order to maintain the overall appearance, the Virus section has been renovated and developed, the buildings have been renovated (paints), the work of Landscape, and the work of landscaping and the plantation of laboratories.
